Why Do Men Have More Hair Loss Than Women?

Over the weekend, I received an email from someone who asked "how come men lose hair or have hair thinning while women don't?" I dropped everything to respond to this because I feel so passionately about it. The truth, is women DO lose hair and have thinning hair. However, women often don't get the same amount of help as their male counterparts because not as much is known about the causes of their hair loss. And, female hair loss doesn't provide as much money to the pharmaceutical industries and therefore receives much less research monies. I hope to see this gradually changing as more women speak up about this problem and demand answers. I'll discuss this more in the following article.

Hormones Can Affect Both Men's And Women's Hair: At the end of the day, hormones are overwhelmingly the most common cause of hair changes for both sexes. In men, androgens and DHT causes patterned thinning which often presents as a receding hair line or thinning up top. This can progress to all over loss or you may just be thinning or balding on top (and sometimes at the crown.) Also, men will often have "peach fuzz" or miniaturized regrowth that makes the coverage in these areas just inadequate. Often, stopping or slowing the production of androgens on the scalp and then stimulating regrowth can help greatly. But, finding something that actually does this is often easier said than done. Medications cause undesirable side effects and become less effective over time. I advocate trying topicals or the least invasive treatments first so that you are leaving yourself room to become more aggressive later on.

On the other end of the spectrum, women often have hair shedding or loss following hormonal changes or fluctuations. This sometimes comes as we age, but it can also come after we give birth, are under stress, or begin to overproduce substances like cortisol. Sometimes this is temporary (in cases of telogen effluvium / TE) and sometimes it can go on for longer as we struggle to right our hormones. It's very tempting to try birth control pills and / or hormone replacement, but often once the genie is out of the bottle and the loss starts, it's hard to reign this in and changing hormones yet again can sometimes cause the cycle to just keep repeating itself.

There are different patterns to women's hair loss. Sometimes it presents as diffuse. There is no one area that's worse than another and you'll see that your ponytail or volume just gets smaller and smaller. (This can be androgen related also, though.) Other times, the loss will present as just a widening of the part and a thinning on top. There is a common misconception that although a woman may become thinner on top, it isn't loss as severe as a man would get or it doesn't become as noticeable. This isn't always true.

And, it's becoming increasingly more common to see women with more male patterned loss (more severe thinning, receding temples, and sparser crown, etc.) I am not sure why this is รข€“ whether it's hormones in our food, or toxins in our environment, the stressful world we live in or whether humans are just evolving this way. But there's no denying that it's happening, in greater numbers, all the time. Often, doctors just don't know what to do about this and every one ends up frustrated. That's why you sometimes have to educate yourself and take a close look at your individual situation to help yourself. You know what is normal for you and what isn't.

How do I know all of this? Because I lived it. In my quest to end my hair loss, I saw many doctors who reassured me that every thing was normal. In the end, I looked at my own triggers, my iron, my thyroid, my adrenals, my hormones, and my scalp's health. It was a long, hard, frustrating journey which all but wrecked my self esteem but I finally found something that helped quite a bit.
