Once upon a time, I managed sales teams and ran training seminars. I had a mantra then which I adhere to now, even though I've not been involved in sales for many years. It is the bedrock reason for setting goals, and is simply this: "Without a target, just about anything is good enough!" Ok, that was my own saying, but here are five quotes from great men. If we heed them, they can only help us maximise our true potential.
Moving on from that basis, when it comes to actually setting goals, I imagine most of us are familiar with - and hopefully live by - the famous Napoleon Hill quotation, "What the mind of man can conceive and believe - it can achieve ." It always bears repeating and thinking about. Put another way, what the conscious mind can see as being viable, the subconscious mind will set about helping it accomplish. I've said in other articles, and I believe implicitly, that the subconscious is the workhorse of the mind. Get the subconscious onside and in the habit of achieving goals and you become very powerful indeed!
In talking about belief, there is a saying of Henry Ford's which I feel we should all remember: "Whether you believe you can, or believe you can't - you're right either way!" I don't need to expand on that too much. Self-belief is all-important here, which of course is why many of us use affirmations.
There is another spur to action which I personally live by. I don't know who to attribute this to, but it runs like this: "There are essentially three kinds of people: those who MAKE things happen, those who WATCH things happen, and those who say, 'What happened?'" Personally I'd rather be in that first kind!
I believe it was John Quincey Adams (6th American President) who said something which follows on logically from this and which certainly inspires me: "If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader". Having great belief, setting goals and achieving them does help us touch and inspire others. What a tremendous feeling! What a great goal in itself!
Finally - and I've never heard anyone else mention this - there is a quotation from the late President JFK which I think of daily. These words were almost the last spoken by Bobby Kennedy just before he was shot during his own presidential campaign. This quote is so powerful it is etched on my mind as indelibly as if it had been stamped there. It is simply this: "Some men see things as they are and say 'Why?'. I dream things that never were, and say 'Why not?'." If it wasn't for people having that sort of attitude we'd still believe the world is flat! Just because something hasn't been done before does not mean to say you can't do it!
I have personally conceived three unique ideas over the past twenty years. I do mean "unique", as in never done before or even thought of. In keeping with the Kennedy and Napoleon Hill maxims I saw them through successfully, despite in some cases coming up against walls of negativity.
These quotes should inspire and motivate. I hope they have done that.
