When it comes to choosing a brand of vitamins or supplements, there is always a huge selection of options, but which one is right for you? How can a regular consumer, who is not an MD or ND find an answer to that question? And why is this question appears to be so problematic in answering? Especially, when almost every Vitamin manufacturer in the world follows the general trend towards "naturalization" of the world and puts magic keywords on their labels and packages.
Lets take a look at the root of the confusion problem.
First, there are two types of vitamins: synthetic and natural. To better understand the difference between the two, think "common sense"! The difference is coded in the words themselves. While synthetic vitamins appear to be a result of synthesis, their natural counterparts are extracted from whole food. The latter are much more expensive to manufacture, but they are the real vitamins. In other words, synthesis is an alternative to the process of extraction for the purposes of cost reduction. Have you noticed the price difference between different vitamins? Usually, those that do not state the source are the synthetic vitamins and synthetic vitamins are cheaper. However, economical efficiency is not always the wisest strategy, especially when it comes to health. Many of the synthetic vitamins are nothing more than left-handed molecules and therefore they cannot take part in the chemical processes in the body that are meant for a right-handed molecule. So what benefits are there in taking synthetic vitamins? If any at all? What information does the human body get, when it receives the substance that is created to cheat it? Does it utilize the substance as if it was a real thing, digesting it and using it to eliminate the cause of the problem - vitamin deficiency? Or does it get the information that the "vitamin" is there, eliminates the symptom and instead of correcting the problem, just covers it? Hence the question: what happens to the problem, then?
There is no doubt, that the best source of vitamins is the whole food itself. However, it is almost impossible to consume 100% of the RDA from the foods. In this case, the best source would be herbal powders or herbs, or vitamins extracted from whole food. The latest trend in supplement industry is to introduce herbs into multivitamin complex with the intention of adding some extra features to the product, essentially differentiating it from the competitors. It is wise for a consumer to pay attention to the sources of the vitamins presented in those multivitamin complexes.
