Calls, text messages, MMS, e-mail, instant messaging, Facebook, Twitter - our new cell phone has it all. Do we love it or hate it? Difficult to tell... In principle, having the chance to get so much out of something you can fit in your pocket is great. You can be in the train for several hours and you've got so much entertainment at your fingertips that it's difficult to get bored. Or you could use your commuting time to make plans with friends. And you no longer have to find a PC to check your e-mail, Facebook or Twitter.
On the other hand, assuming that you have just one e-mail account that you frequently use, and that you also use Facebook and Twitter, how many notifications do you expect to receive every day? Adding the phone calls and SMS, your phone might make some noise once every hour. And this is one thing that not everyone is crazy about.
A new study by Pew discovered that lots of people feel safer because they can use their phone in case they need help. Also, they like that they have the chance to stay in touch with people and make plans. However, the same people think it's rude when someone else frequently interrupts a conversation to check their phone, and get irritated when they are interrupted by their own phone.
According to the research, 91% of people feel safer because of their mobile phone, and 88% like that they can use it to make plans. Almost 40% use it for entertainment purposes when they get bored. In the same time, almost everyone (86%) find it rude when someone else uses their phone repeatedly during a meeting or conversation, and 42% get irritated when an incoming call or text message interrupts them. Younger people (19-24) get irritated more often than older ones, which might be because they actually use their phone more and thus receive more phone calls and text messages.
It feels good to have our phone on silent mode from time to time - especially when we're tired or low. But we probably still check to see if we missed an important call. Only rarely we shut it off completely. It gets irritating and disruptive all the time, but many people feel that they couldn't live without it. Mobile phones help us make plans and get in touch with others so easily. But in the same time, they are the source of so many disagreements. I don't know anyone who has never had a fight over missing a phone call. And now that you have e-mail and instant messaging and Facebook on your phone, people might even expect you to reply to those messages right away.
Nevertheless, it feels good to have such a sophisticated phone, and it's up to you how and when to use its features. Right? But often you create some behavior patterns without realizing that they can become overwhelming. They work for a while, and then start to become irritating and disruptive. So apparently we love it and hate it at the same time. What can we do about it?
